Colonel Yancy S. Short is currently assigned to the 130th Airlift Wing, located at McLaughlin Air National Guard Base in Charleston, West Virginia. He is the commander for the 130th Medical Group. He is responsible for all healthcare activities which include the Physical Exam Side (PES) and CERF-P Units, as they relate to the mission readiness and viability of the 130th Airlift Wing, including medical support and operations, base health management and protection, and all programs and policies related to healthcare management. He provides command and control over 103 personnel, ensuring proficiency in all areas of medical readiness and their ability to support federal active duty or state homeland response.
Short entered military service in April 2010, serving as a General Surgeon for the 130th Airlift Wing. In 2012, he attended flight school and became a Flight Surgeon. Short has deployed in support of Operations Inherent Resolve and Freedom’s Sentinel. He has served in multiple leadership rolls including Chief of Medical Staff (SGH), and Chief of Aerospace Medicine (SGP). Prior to his current assignment of Commander of the Medical Group, in February 2019, Colonel Short served as Interim Commander of the Medical Group, 130th Airlift Wing. His civilian background includes more than 24 years of medical and business experience as a general surgeon who now specializes in robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery.
