CHARLESTON, WV-Members of the 130th Airlift Wing volunteered their time to help out competitors during the 2008 Special Olympics June 6th-8th at Laidley Field. The almost unbearable 90-degree weather didn't hold back our members from keeping good spirits. Unit volunteers cheered on competitors as they participated in track and field activities, arts, crafts, and karaoke.
Staff Sgt. Sean Endres and Senior Airman Ivan Maldonado raked the sand in the long jump area and watched enthusiastic participants compete in the heat. In the tent activitiy area, Master Sgt. Michelle Barton assisted in assembling bead art. The tents were an area the volunteers and participants could go cool down, hydrate and have a good time in between field events.
The 130th Services Squadron served dinner in the Mountaineer Café to Special Olympics staff, volunteers and participants. Services hapily extended their normal drill weekend hours to offer this support.
The unit has volunteered during the Special Olympics for years and will continue to look forward to the event. It has always been a rewarding atmosphere.
